Ronda Rousey’s return to the UFC is official, and the former champ will have the opportunity to regain the women’s bantamweight title in her comeback bout.
Rousey (12-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC), who hasn’t been seen in the octagon since a shocking second-round knockout loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193 in November, will challenge current 135-pound titleholder Amanda Nunes(13-4 MMA, 6-1 UFC) in the main event of December’s UFC 207 event.
UFC President Dana White today announced the news on “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd on FS1.
“The thing that everybody has been waiting for for a good year, Ronda Rousey is back,” White said. “She will fight Dec. 30 for the title.”
How sweet. Travis Browne must be going broke Dana gets his little do no wrong princess back and throws her right into a title shot after 13 months of inactivity. And I mean inactivity
The division played out perfectly for Rousey as well while backfiring on the UFC while she was gone. Holly Holm who Rousey 2 would have biggest ReMatch in MMA history, even bigger than Diaz/Conor 2. But Holm has since dropped two straight fights (Miesha Tate & Valentina Shevchenko) all but eliminating herself from any rematch with Rousey until a year or two and a victory or two down the line. Whichever comes first. Miesha Tate now with the title, defended against Nunes at UFC 200 and got the hell beat out of her. Tate/Rousey 3 would have been huge as well with Rousey likely getting the belt back to finish their triology. Now they have Nunes on top with the title who unfortunately not being a white American Woman isn’t going to sell any extra tickets. She has some personality and fire but ultimately can’t move the needle. Her style, pressing forward will leave her open to get thrown down and arm barred. If not, she still has no gas tank and if Rousey shows up in shape….
Then I see no reason she doesn’t get her title right back and become a draw again, even if she’s paired up with someone who couldn’t draw flies like Schevchenko. She was set up to be bigger than Conor though, but her thirteen month pity party cost her that. Her and Conor shared the throne on top of the UFC last year, but 2016 it belongs to McGregor now and no matter what happens December 30th that isn’t changing.
(Unless she convinces Cyborg to come down to 135 and fight. That will break UFC 205 records).
